Prof. Dr. Deng Shuiquan.

Prof. Dr. Deng is the director of the “Institute for Multi-scale Structures of Advanced Materials” of Superconductivity and New Energy R&D center. In 1995, he worked in Geneva University of Switzerland as a postdoctoral fellow. Since 1996, he has worked in Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research, a world first-class institute in condensed matter sciences as a Bat-I staff scientist and group leader of theory in department of solid state chemistry (Abt. Simon). Together with Prof. Simon, he has proposed and developed the “flat/steep band model for superconductivity”, which is one of the main contributions for the most prestige prize, Liebig prize, of GDCH in 2003/2004. His research activities focus mainly on the relations between the multi-scale structures and the relevant properties by using symmetry and topology as the basic tool. At subatomic length-scale, he studies the physical mechanisms responsible for some important and novel properties such as superconductivity, topological insulator, strong magnetism etc. with emphasize on the many-body interactions between orbitals, spins and other elementary particles. Above the atomic scale, his group focuses on the damage tolerance, fracture mechanics, and thermal properties etc. for nuclear fusion related extreme materials. The numeric methods used involve first-principles, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo as well as finite elements methods etc. .
